Is Solar Battery Storage Worth It?

We’ve previously talked about what battery storage is and how it works, particularly with solar PV (photovoltaic) panels. But that doesn’t quite answer the next question — is it worth it? It is definitely beneficial to install solar panels, both for you and for the environment, but battery storage is the next step to take — with even greater rewards.

So, would a solar battery system be a worthwhile investment for your home? That depends on how much it would cost and how much it would save.

Why Invest in a Solar Battery?

In May 2019, Which? conducted a survey on over 100 Which? Connect members with a solar battery:

  • 65% said they bought it for the purpose of using more electricity from their solar PV panels.
  • 17% said they bought it to save money on electricity.
  • 8% said they wanted to reduce their carbon footprint.
  • The large majority said their solar battery met their expectations of saving money and reducing their carbon footprint.

One of the big perks of battery storage is that you can use your solar energy even after the sun goes down. But even without solar panels, a battery can be great for your home. With or without a solar system attached, you can have a battery on Economy 7 that charges up at night for half the price, for you to use the next day.

How Much Can You Save?

That depends on the amount of energy you use and how much you can produce.

Your Energy Usage

We expect, based on stats from Smarter Business and Octopus Energy, that your household uses 8.5–10kWh (kilowatt hours) of electric energy on average per day. According to UK Power, the average electric bill for a 3- or 4-bedroom house is £49 a month, £590 a year. But of course, bigger houses tend to use more energy.

Whatever your electric bill is, charging your battery on Economy 7 from the electric grid can cut it in half — and that’s without solar panels providing clean, renewable energy for free.

Your Solar Output

According to The Eco Experts, the average domestic solar panel has an output of around 265W (watts). After an hour, that’s 0.265kWh of energy per panel.

If you install a solar system with, for example, JA Solar 315W panels, then just one panel sitting in the sun for 6 hours can produce up to 1.89kWh. Make it 5 panels for 6 hours, and you’ll generate up to 9.45kWh. Connect it to a solar battery, and you’ll likely have enough energy stored away to last you all day and night.

In short, you could make huge savings on your electric bills — maybe even cut them out entirely.

How Much Do Solar Batteries Cost?

In that Which? survey we mentioned earlier, over 100 solar battery owners said how much they paid for their solar panel batteries:

  • 99% paid £9,000 or under (<16 years’ worth of electric bills, at £590 per year.)
  • 80% paid £6,000 or under (<11 years).
  • 60% paid £5,000 or under (<9 years).
  • 45% paid £4,000 or under (<7 years).

Ploughcroft’s Solar Systems

At Ploughcroft, our solar battery storage, panels included, starts from £8,000.

In partnership with Prime Hybrid Energy, that includes the solar PV panels, a Hybrid 3.6kW Inverter, and a set of LiFePO4 modular batteries. And there’s more…

myenergiecloud.com monitoring solar generation and storageAs well as storing your energy, our solar systems can let you monitor your generation and consumption through myenergycloud.com. We also offer Zappi EV (Electrical Vehicle) charging, which comes with its own monitoring and control through myenergi.com and the myenergi app.

There’s just one question left to answer…

Is Your Roof Ready for Solar Panels?

Please bear in mind that your solar PV panels must be installed on a structurally sound roof. Before making such a large investment, it’s worth thinking about the current state of your roof.

How much longer will it last before you need a re-roof?

Does it have proper insulation, to help save even more money on your bills?

Luckily, we also offer our solar panels and battery storage as part of a larger package with our very own Eco Roof™. Starting from £15,000 for smaller houses and up to £30,000–35,000 for larger houses, this includes:

  • Stripping and reinstalling your roof with state-of-the-art insulation, to cut down on the heat escaping from your house.
  • Installing your new solar energy system: PV panels, Hybrid inverter, battery storage, energy monitoring, and Zappi EV charging integration.

There’s no doubt, solar batteries are a big investment for your home. In the short run, it would be cheaper to go without and get your electric the old-fashioned way. But in the long run, a full solar system will pay for itself, and then some, whilst doing wonders for your carbon footprint.
