How to Choose a Reputable Contractor

Does your contractor meet the standard?

When choosing a contractor you should consider your choice very carefully. These guidelines are aimed at making you think before you choose a contractor to help minimise the risk of hiring someone without the required skills.

Employing a good, reputable contractor in terms of price, reliability and workmanship will greatly reduce the potential for problems, and should there be any, it will be far easier to get these rectified.

Remember:

  • A contractor with a reputation to preserve is more likely to be around should you have problems later.
  • Don’t expect free advice unless you have a real intention to award the contract!
  • Be clear from the outset what you want the contractor to do and then stick to it – changing your mind too often will probably prove expensive.

Please be aware that when carrying out refurbishment work to 50% or more of a roof’s area that either a Competent Roofer (a Competent Person Scheme for roofing) must be employed or your Local Authority Building Control must be contracted prior to work starting. This is in order to confirm that the roof should be upgraded to meet thermal requirements of Part L of the current Building Regulation.

Stay Safe

Never, ever agree upfront to pay in cash.

Letting people know you have cash lying around your property leaves you vulnerable to unscrupulous individuals.
