As heritage roof specialists, Ploughcroft has secured a new contract to repair the 236-year-old, Grade I listed Piece Hall in Halifax, a major historical landmark. Because of our vast knowledge of the Halifax roof scape, we were trusted to repair the roof so that it fits in with the local landscape as well as keeping the original look of the Piece Hall.
Due to the Piece Hall’s protected status as a Grade I listed building, it was necessary to bring in a heritage roofing specialist, and Ploughcroft are one of the only construction agencies in the region qualified to complete such specialist work.
The Piece Hall is undergoing a £7 million regeneration project to conserve the building and attract new businesses and visitors to Halifax. It is part of a larger project in Halifax to develop the town’s Cultural Quarter, including a brand new Central Library, the Cornerstone extension to Square Chapel Centre for the Arts and the new Orangebox youth centre.
There are over 10,000 stone slates which need checking for repair. Ploughcroft will work hard over the next few months to weather-proof and fix the tiles so the building will stand for another 200 years! We are looking forward to see the historic building transformed into a twenty-first-century visitor attraction that still maintains its heritage.
Chris Hopkins, Managing Director of Ploughcroft, says:
“Being a Halifax-based business ourselves, we’re delighted to be working on such a well-known, historical, local landmark. We are proud to play a part in helping maintain a building that has such an interesting local history, and the project was the opportunity to combine our two passions; heritage work, and eco roofing. The building plays such an important role in our community today and thanks to the regeneration project, hopefully it will attract more people to the area and offer more things to do and see.”
The 12 month heritage roofing project has allowed us to further extend our apprenticeship scheme in heritage slating and lead work. Oliver Stock, an apprentice currently working on the Piece Hall project, says:
“I’ve been working at Ploughcroft as an apprentice for XX months and am loving learning about the trade while on the job. Hearing the news that we will be working on such a well-known local landmark is really exciting and I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and learning all about the specialist area of heritage slating and lead work.”
The new Piece Hall is due to open in Summer 2017.
