Located in the biggest county in England, North Yorkshire, and sitting on the River Ouse you can find the historic town of York. York is a walled city that backdates itself to Roman times.

The city was founded by Romans in 71AD but at this point in time they named is 'Eboracum', due to its position in England it became the Roman capital of Britannia Inferior and of the Jorvik kingdom, to this day one of the main attractions in York is the Jorvik Centre which is a museum which displays the history and tells the story of early York.

In the 19th century York really took a step forward in terms of its railway network and manufacturing centre. More recently however, York has moved away from these industries as the times have changed, two of the biggest employers currently in York are the University of York and the health services.

There is plenty to see and do in York and one of the most prominent and outstanding sights would by York Minster. Standing at the centre of York, the minster is the largest Gothic building in northern Europe. Alternatively, York Castle is an array of buildings ranging from Clifford's Tower and the former prison York Castle Museum.

Famous people from York include the historical figure Francis Drake and John Goodricke who worked as an astronaut and going back even further and we can find Ivar the Boneless who was a Viking chieftain throughout the times that the Saxons came to Britain.
