Wolverhampton is a city that is situated in the West Midlands in England and is a rather large town with a very diverse social demographic. It is estimated that the local government district and the wider area of Wolverhampton have a collective population of approximately 251,462 which makes it the 13th most populous English city.

Wolverhampton claimed city status in 1974 but it has a rich history that goes far back. It is common practice to acknowledge that the town was named after Lady Wulfrun who founded the town in 985. However this is in dispute as the city may have earned its original name from the Mercian King. People from Wolverhampton are commonly known as Wulfrunians.

Before the industrial revolution hit, the market town of Wolverhampton was known to be a town with specialist skills in the wool trade. During the industrial revolution, however, the city became a major mining centre as it had an abundance of natural resources that included coal, limestone and iron ore. The rich deposits also led it fame as it manufactured the first vehicle to hold the land speed record which, at the time, was over 200 miles per hour.

Wolverhampton also has a solid connection to the music industry and has a number of live music venues. The biggest of which is the Molineux Stadium (The current football ground) which has seen the like of Bon Jovi playing. Famous rock groups to emerge from Wolverhampton include Slade and Cornershop but it also has produced some fine soul and R&B acts.
