Wigan is located in Greater Manchester and it stands on the River Douglas. It is positioned just 8 miles to the South West of Bolton, 10 miles North of Warrington and 16 miles North West of Manchester. Wigan has a population of around 305,600 and it is the largest settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and its administrative centre.

The economy of Wigan boomed during the industrial revolution, as many cities' did, and there was a significant increase in its population. The major industries in Wigan at this point were porcelain manufacturing and clock making, and quite rapidly Wigan became known as a mill town and a coal mining district. It had such an extensive coal mining network that it had 1,000 pits shafts within 5 miles of the centre and a town councillor stated that ‘a coal mine in ones back yard is common in Wigan’

One of the main attractions in Wigan has to be the Wigan Pier, a wharf on the Leeds and Liverpool canal. Wigan Pier was made famous by the author George Orwell in his book titled 'The Road to Wigan Pier'. Using the facilities of the variety of warehouses and wharfs the Wigan Pier became a focal point for its heritage and culture.

The football team in Wigan is called Wigan Athletic F.C. and Wigan Warriors is the rugby team, both these teams share the DW Stadium, originally named the JJB Stadium. The capacity of the stadium is roughly 25,000 and its record attendance is when Wigan played Manchester United in 2008.
