The town of Preston is located in the North West of England and alongside the River Ribble. The year of 2002 was a joyous time for Preston as it achieved city status, this marked it the 50th city in England. Preston is home to approximately 132,000 city residents but including the surrounding areas the figure increases to 335,000.

Preston has a heritage to be proud of and it also played an important role in the industrial age. The textile industry began in the 13th and by the 14th century Flemish weavers were producing and weaving wool to sell in England to export to other countries as well. Sir Richard Arkwright was born in Preston and he was probably the most important historical figure in the industrial revolution.

Another historical figure from Preston was Joseph Hansom, a keen and proficient architect who designed the St Walburge Church which is still standing to this very day. He also invented the Hansom Cab which is effectively a horse drawn carriage to take people around the city. Hansom was a great contributor to Preston’s architecture and alongside Sir Richard Arkwright put Preston on the map.

There are numerous examples of Georgian architecture throughout the city and some of those interesting structures include the Harris Museum, the old coin exchange and a bounty of historic churches. Not only that but it also has plenty out outdoor relaxation places including Miller Park, Avenham and Ashton.

Known for its sports, with the likes of Preston North End Football Club, and Preston is also the birthplace of cricketer Andrew Flintoff.
