Plymouth is located in the South of England, and in particular it can be found on the South coast of Devon. Plymouth gets its name from the river upon which it is founded. It is built in-between the mouths of the River Plym and the River Tamar to the west. Since 1967, Plymouth expanded itself and now includes the suburbs of Pympton and Plymstock which can be found on the east side of the River Plym.

Throughout the industrial revolution Plymouth had an influential grip on the handling of imports and passengers both from and to the Americas. Due to this, Plymouth grew as a major shipping port and became one of the most frequently used doorways for importing and exporting goods in England. The neighbouring town of Devonport took on a different role and grew as an important building place for Royal Navy ships.

With a population of around 250,000 people, Plymouth can be considered as the 16th most populous city in England. It has a very large student population thanks to the University of Plymouth and also boasts the biggest operational naval base in Western Europe.

Plymouth is home to the football team Plymouth Argyle F.C. who play at their home ground of Home Park. The nickname for Plymouths home team is 'The Pilgrims'

Plymouth was home to the famous Antarctic explores Robert Falcon Scott and Frank Bickerton who both lived in the city and went on to explore some of the most daunting and challenging landscape on the planet.
