Ploughcroft Apprentice Wins SkillBuild Competition Local Heat

A big congratulations is in order for our talented apprentice, Charlie Oakes, who recently won the local heat of the prestigious SkillBuild competition at Leeds College of Building.

For over 45 years, SkillBuild has been putting trainee construction craftsmen and women through their paces as they battle it out to be crowned SkillBuild winner in their chosen craft trade.

The ten different trade occupations and professions consist of bricklaying, cabinet making, carpentry, dry walling systems, joinery, painting and decorating, plastering, roofing, stonemasonry and wall and floor tiling.

Being the UK’s biggest construction skills competition, SkillBuild is a challenging, rewarding and fulfilling experience and a way for trainees to stand out, whilst at the beginning of their construction career, standing them in good stead for the future. They also get the opportunity to rub shoulders and network with construction professionals currently at the top of their game.

The overall SkillBuild competition, which is organised by the CITB (Sector Skills Council and Industry Training Board for the construction industry), comprises of two different contests:

The Senior Competition is aimed at those studying a minimum of NVQ Level 2 in their chosen craft trade.

The New Entrant Competition is entered by students or apprentices in their first year of training, or those studying an ‘introductory’ qualification in the profession.

The exciting Regional Heats are hosted by various colleges throughout the country between June and April. After excelling in the Roofing category, Charlie will progress onto the regional heats, also held at Leeds College of Building on 22nd June.

The highest scoring competitors from the Regional Heats then have the opportunity to compete in the SkillBuold National Final, this year held over three days at the Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham between 16-18th November.

The finalists then earn themselves a chance to represent the UK in the international skills competitions of EuroSkills and WorldSkills.

Keep an eye on our Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ profiles to see how Charlie progresses throughout the competition and head over to social media to wish him luck!
