Leicester is a beautiful city that is located in the East Midlands of England and in the county town of Leicestershire. The city has some lovely natural features which include the River Soar and the National Forest. The population of Leicester is estimated to be 289,700 which places it in top position for population in the region.

Leicester is a city with a rich heritage, most of which can still be seen today. There are ancient Roman pavements and baths that are still around from the early Roman settlement named 'Ratae Corieltauvorum. Furthermore, you can find a Roman military outpost based in a region that was once occupied by the Celtic Corieltauvi tribe. Following the demise of Roman society the settlement was captured by the Danes and it became one of five fortified towns.

Throughout the early modern period Leicester continued steady growth as a market town, however it was when the industrial revolution hit that Leicester picked up the pace which subsequently led to an unplanned rapid urbanisation in the area. The town focussed on engineering, shoemaking and the production of hosiery, there was great economic success linked to these industries which helped to swallow up the surrounding country side. These days Leicester is home to the offices of many big companies including DHL and Wal*Mart, however their main focal point in today’s society is the engineering industry.

Leicester is the proud birthplace of David Attenborough, probably the most famous man of his kind when it comes to narrating exploration documentaries. In addition to David, you can also find the Yale professor of history and classics, John Matthews, originating from Leicester.
